Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain entered the top 20, while Guild Wars 2 made a strong return in September’s Most Played. Overall, play time was down 9.77% compared to August.
Highlights
The top four games in September’s Most Played all decreased in play time versus last month. Though League of Legends and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive lost less than 8%, World of Warcraft and Dota 2 were each hit with 20+% play-time drops. Ranks remained unchanged, however.
Rounding out the top five in September was Diablo III with an incredible play time increase of 112.17%. The dungeon crawler rose three spots thanks in part to the late August release of Season 4 and its Bountiful Bounties Double Cache event held on the last weekend of September.
The rest of the top ten shifted downwards a rank with the exception of Smite. The MOBA rose four places as it received new gods, character and item balances, and more.
Our biggest gainer of September was Guild Wars 2, which jumped eight places due to a major update that added new content to the Gem Store and a week-long discount to the complete Living World Season 2 pack. We’ll have to see what kind of boost the game gets from its first expansion pack in late October.
Joining the top 20 in September was Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, which landed just inside the top 15.
With no new updates or new content in September, The Witcher 3 clung onto the top 20 this month. However, the game’s grip may tighten in October’s Most Played as the game’s first expansion, Hearts of Stone, releases at the end of the month.
